Origin: Shaped By Time

Solar Fields has been one my favourite go-to artists to listen to since around 2006 I guess, when I first discovered the track “Cocoon Moon” (2005 Glastonbury Mix) during university. I had that track on repeat almost daily, used it for studying, writing, meditating, and even sleeping. It’s probably one of my top streamed tracks of all time. I’ll drop it here.

Solar Fields is a project by Swedish composer and sound designer Magnus Birgersson. Here’s an extract from his artist bio:

“[He] is known for his immersive blend of ambient, downtempo, and cinematic electronic music. Based in Gothenburg, he began releasing music in the late ’90s, gaining global recognition for his lush soundscapes and emotional depth. A classically trained pianist and seasoned multi-instrumentalist, Birgersson combines analog synths, digital tools, and acoustic elements at his Studio Jupiter to craft richly textured works.”

I’ve always found his music magical and ethereal. One of my favourite albums in particular was “Origin” and then the following “Origin” albums of which there are now four. The depth present in his exploration of life through the music and sounds in these albums are just fascinating. This year, he’s released the four albums as one epic 5 hour 9 minute long album and I’m absolutely here for it.

For anyone who enjoys atmospheric, ambient, psybient, consciousness-expanding, experimental music - this is for you.

I’ll drop the Bandcamp link here but it’s available to stream across all platforms.

Origin is described as: 40 tracks spanning over two decades of music.

“What began as unfinished sketches and forgotten fragments has been reshaped into a vast sonic journey, moving through luminous ambient expanses, cinematic soundscapes, and hypnotic rhythms. Each track carries the mark of its original spark, a melody, a chord, a half-formed idea. now fully realized in dialogue with the present. It is both a retrospective and a rediscovery: the past preserved and transformed, the unfinished given its final form.

Origin – Shaped By Time is a map of creative evolution, a reflection on memory and process, and an invitation to explore the infinite depth of the Solar Fields sound world.”

I once emailed Magnus to tell him that “Cocoon Moon” was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’d ever heard, and he had kindly replied. Nearly two decades later, I’m grateful to still be listening, and to hear the Origin series gathered into this expansive record.

Here’s to our origins…shaped by time.
